Varje månad riktar vi strålkastarljuset mot en av de många ledare som inspirerar oss. Konceptet kallar vi för PRO TEMPORE Spotlight, och den här gången är det Matthew Cusick, Group CFO på Nederman, som står i fokus!

How has your career journey evolved up to today? What have been your key drivers and decisions, and where are you right now?
I have always been interested in Finance, and after graduating from university I qualified as an auditor and worked for a number of years in the UK with a very wide range of clients, which was an excellent base for a Finance career. I had already made the decision that I wanted to shift from auditing into industry before I moved to Sweden in 2004, and took a role as Group Accountant at Getinge’s head office late that year. After holding a couple of different positions there I moved to Nederman as Group Controller in 2011. Nederman was a smaller company back then, but clearly ambitious and with a strong position in a continually growing industrial air filtration market, and we have grown significantly since I arrived. I served as CFO for EMEA from 2013 to 2016 and have held the role of Group CFO since then.

What is currently priority on your agenda?
As CFO of a listed company, ensuring that the constantly increasing regulatory reporting requirements, for example CSRD, does not burden the operational organisation more than is absolutely necessary is incredibly important. Nederman is continually looking to develop, and we have invested significant amounts in more efficient production facilities around the world, not least here in Helsingborg where we also have a new innovation centre. We will also continue to grow via M&A and therefore one area of recent focus has been recent securing a new financing agreement which we signed during February.

What type of leader do you strive to be?
I try to be approachable, and supportive of my team, and as a leader I feel it is vital to make clear decisions. Developing people by giving them responsibility is important, and I try to remember to ask, “What do you recommend?” on a regular basis. At Nederman we have a strong Group Finance team, and a proven record of developing and promoting Finance personnel into new roles in the group.

What and/or who inspires you?
I am inspired by great sporting achievements, and the motto “Never give up”. Muhammad Ali’s  Rumble in the Jungle, Liverpool’s champions league victory in 2005, and a Scandinavian one in Charlotte Kalla in the 2014 Olympics relay. On a professional level I am always impressed by people who are able to explain complicated concepts in a straight forward way – we have a number of these in the Nederman group including those in our innovation team and our operations technology centre.

What experience do you have of PRO TEMPORE?
A very good experience, not least because a key member of our Group Finance team came to us thanks to PRO TEMPORE!
